    Herb's Description

    Garcinia morella Desrouss. Obtained from a small or medium sized evergreen tree 30-50 ft hiph, with spreading branches, quite glabrous; young branches quadrangular, smooth leaves 7.5-12.5 by 3.8-6.3 cm; elliptic-obovate to ovate-lanceolate, petioles 6 mm long. Male flowers axillary. Rudimentary ovary 0, female flowers larger than the male, solitary, axillary, usually sessile. Sepals and petals as in the male, the former persistent; the latter deciduous. Staminodes 18-30, in a ring round the ovary, connate at the base. Ovary globular, smooth, 4-celled. Fruit 2 cm diameter; subglobose, surrounded at the base by the persistent sepals, glabrous. Seeds 4, ovoid-reniform, slightly compressed; testa muriculate, dark brown(9). Garcinia morella is the indigenous source of gamboge, which occurs as a yellowish emulsion in the cortex, pith, leaves, flowers and fruits. It is obtained by making a spiral incision during the rainy season on the bark of tree, not less than 10 years old(13l). Gamboge {Usarah-e-Rewancf) is reddish yellow or brownish orange in colour. Gamboge is also obtained from other species of Guttiferae

    In large doses,gamboge is a powerful hydragogue cathartic causing nausea, vomiting and griping. Too large doses can be fatal .It causes purgation and if the dose is increased may cause vomiting. Four gram gum resin has been found fatal for causing gastroenteritis.
